Google Click-to-Call

My company recently tried out Google's new Click-to-Call advertising program and it turned out both a comedy and a disappointment.

3 phone calls were made at a cost of $81.46. This is almost $27 per phone call, bloody expensive! Well, hmm not really if the calls were actually sales leads. Now comes the funny part.

One of the calls was made by a guy who called just for fun. It's the first time he saw a click-to-call ad and keyed his number on our ad just to see how it works.

The second was made from Pizza Hut asking if we want to order a pizza!

Finally, the third call went missing in action. God knows, where the call went.

I work for a recruitment agency and I was thinking about trying this for our clients...now I'm not so sure. First I didn't think it would be so expensive per call and secondly if they can expect those types of calls, I'll be in hot water! Thanks for the article.

Hi Brian,

I had a question, I read over the Click to Call FAQ and they said you don't pay for the call costs and spam calls get reimbursed. Is this different for Australia?

http://www.google.com/help/faq_clicktocall.html

# Am I charged for the connection?

No. Google pays the bill for all calls, both local and long-distance. However, if you give us a mobile phone number, your normal airtime fees or other fees charged by your provider for the call may apply.

# What if someone enters my phone number instead of theirs as a prank call?

Google takes fraud and spamming very seriously. We use technical methods to prevent future prank calls from the same user within a reasonable period of time. You won't be charged for any such calls. Please contact adwords-support@google.com if you believe someone is entering your phone number without your permission or knowledge.

Best regards,

Eiso Kant

p.s. I still read your blog, we should catch up sometime.

We have tried a number of click to call solutions. Skype is great, but limited unless you know how to set it up and your users are also set up. We are looking for one that will be as cheap as skype (i.e. the subscription of VOIP), but requires no set up on the users end.

Online marketing has proved to be crisis resistant. The internet marketing industry has not stopped growing although the economic climate is not helping the market. Many companies have decided to cut marketing budget without considering decreasing the number of customers. The viable option for this contradiction is applying the latest techonolgies of online marketing tools such as social media marketing and top search engine marketing.

$27 a call isn't expensive - it's daylight robbery!
